Shadwell Estates boss Sheikha Hissa made a rare foray into Newmarket canters on Thursday morning to see her superstar Baaeed complete her serious preparation for the Qipco Champion Stakes on Saturday week.
The daughter of the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and her entourage showed up at the parking lot atop Al Bahathri Polytrack before watching Michael Hills put the unbeaten colt to the test on the all-weather facility.
Led by a decent senior handicapper, the son of Sea The Stars swept coach William Haggas and Sheikha Hissa into the six-stay post lookout tower and quickly put daylight between him and his mate as he headed towards the one mile marker.
Baaeed is a best-priced 1-3 chance to lift the curtain on his career on Saturday week at Ascot, the hottest favorite since Frankel made it to 2-11 a decade ago.
Richard Hills, Shadwell Estates Assistant Race Director, said: “It was good that Sheikha Hissa could come and watch Baaeed work this morning as she was there for sales and she did something similar before Royal Ascot if I remember well.
“She’s only ever seen three pieces of work in Newmarket, all of which featured Baaeed, so she set the bar pretty high.”

He added: “My brother Michael was very pleased with himself in what was just routine work. It’s just about giving him some freshness and I imagine he will do something similar to the beginning of next week.
“He’s set to rock and roll for Ascot where he competes against some fine horses, but we’re thrilled to have him racing at a mile and a quarter again.”
There was a lot of talk about the path Baaed would take after his brilliant victory at the Juddmonte International in York in August. An Arc tilt was hinted at, but Hills thinks the right target was chosen.

Regarding the decision to bypass Paris last Sunday, Hills said: “It was 100% the right decision for Baaeed to miss the Arc. In the end, the ground was heavier at the end of the period than it seemed. had been for the past three years.
“If we had taken the Parisian route, we would have ended up paying the extra and then having to withdraw it some time before the race, which I think the French don’t like very much.
