At the time, Shaughna told her 1.5 million Instagram followers about her experience and urged women to book their smear tests.

She posted a photo from the ward and captioned it: ‘Sun day fun day? So I said I would share my experience with you all and currently I’m shitting my pants.

“Always scream for the ladies to reserve their smears!”

After arriving home, she then addressed the fans, “How did the colposcopy go?” Chilling and feeling sorry for myself for the rest of the day.

“Although I had 3 nurses who were so lovely and made me feel cared for. I always shout for the ladies to book your smears if you are late.

“I received my results yesterday and had changes in some of the cells called ‘borderline changes’ which require further investigation. I also tested positive for HPV,’ she previously said.

HPV stands for Human Papillomavirus, which the NHS describes as “a very common group of viruses”. Although HPV causes no problems in most people, some types can cause genital warts or cancer.

There is no blood test for HPV and it is detected during cervical screening.

“I received my results yesterday and had changes in some of the cells called ‘borderline changes’ which require further investigation. I also tested positive for HPV,’ she previously told her followers.

She continued: “Of course I was absolutely terrified at first, and although everyone I spoke to reassured me how common it is, it’s still scary.”

Shaughna went on to say she was ‘so happy’ to share her smear test results because she was ‘terrified’.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the name for a group of viruses that affect your skin and the moist membranes that line your body.

Transmitted through vaginal, anal, and oral sex and through skin-to-skin contact between the genitals, it is extremely common.

Up to eight in 10 people will be infected with the virus at some point in their lives.

There are over 100 types of HPV. About 30 of them can affect the genital area. Genital HPV infections are common and highly contagious.

Many people never show symptoms, as they can occur years after infection, and the majority of cases resolve without treatment.

It can lead to genital warts and is also known to cause cervical cancer by creating abnormal tissue growth.

Each year, an average of 38,000 cases of HPV-related cancers are diagnosed in the US, 3,100 cases of cervical cancer in the UK, and around 2,000 other cancers in men.

What other cancers does it cause?

  • Throat
  • Neck
  • Language
  • Tonsils
  • Vulva
  • Vagina
  • Penis
  • Anus
