EastEnders' former Albert Square is set to be demolished under new BBC proposals -

EastEnders‘the old set looks likely to be demolished under new planning proposals submitted by the BBC.

The app, which is for the former Albert Square set which is no longer in use, would see complete demolition to maintain health and safety standards.

According to the written request, the previous set had “deterioration” issues.

A BBC spokesperson said digital spy“As per previously documented plans, the site is no longer maintained and is therefore being cleared for health and safety reasons.”

Part of the reason for not maintaining the site was the “prohibitive” costs, the removal of these structures apparently allowing the construction of new sets for EastEnders.

Although the BBC still has plans for the space to be ‘redeveloped’ after demolition, these are subject to planning permission and no specific plans are revealed at this time.

Regardless of how developments are planned, it will be a busy time in Walford, with the return of Alfie Moon causing all sorts of chaos.

After his final stint on the show, actor Shane Richie opened up about how he was convinced to return by producer Chris Clenshaw.

“He said, ‘Listen, we want old Alfie. Because over the years there have all been very different Alfies and my favorite Alfie is from 2002 to 2005’. And that’s the Alfie we got back.

“Chris was so instrumental in telling me the long-term story with Alfie, and he’s the old Alfie,” he continued. “You know, the guy who took care of his Nana Moon and wore his heart on his sleeve and tries to shed some light on everything.”

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show is also streaming on BBC iPlayer.
