Barbara Windsor’s widower Scott reveals his marriage to the late star ‘WAS NOT a closed book’

Barbara Windsor’s widower Scott Mitchell has revealed his marriage to the former EastEnders star ‘was not a closed book’ and that she wanted him to ‘have fun’.

The actor, 59, claimed the pair were not in an open relationship but the late star, who was 27 years older, encouraged him to return to London after partying – adding that they both had ‘a similar attitude towards sex’.

Peggy Mitchell icon Barbara died in December 2020 at the age of 83 following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The couple married in April 2000.

In excerpts from his new book, By Your Side: My Life Loving Barbara Windsor, shared with The Sun ahead of its Oct. 13 release, he made some explosive revelations.

Scott wrote: “On our second date only, Bar had told me in detail about her many conquests. She said it was always good to brush the cobwebs away. Ours was not a open relationship, but it wasn’t a closed book either.

He added that she “didn’t want to stop him from living life to the fullest, like she had,” but their arrangement “started to get a little mixed up.”

“She always said sex was sex and love was love, and she wasn’t one to double standards, so she kept her reservations to herself and didn’t bother me. never asked directly.”

When Barbara could no longer drink, Scott would drop her off at their house in a taxi and pretend that she wanted him to “have fun” in the West End.

He wrote, “It wasn’t to date women, even though we both had a similar attitude towards sex, but to score coke.”

In her own memoir, All Of Me: My Extraordinary Life, the Carry On star blamed herself for her husband’s historic cocaine addiction.

She wrote: “I think I could have stopped Scott’s spiral of self-destruction if there hadn’t been another urge that had turned him from the wonderful guy I loved into a sad, pathetic creature. that I barely recognized.”

The National Treasure said she was initially unaware that her partner was ‘into coke in a big way’, and later feared her addiction was developing due to the age gap in their relationship.

She continued: “I would look at it and think, ‘I didn’t do anything wrong and yet I managed to ruin this man’s life.

“Scott would see the tears in my eyes and promise to get on the wagon. But it never lasted more than three or four days and then he was off on another ride.

Eventually, Scott received treatment from renowned therapist Beechy Colclough under the guidance of Elton John’s manager, John Reid.

Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014 and kept her battle with the disease private for four years.

After her death, Scott told PA: “Her passing was due to Alzheimer’s/dementia and Barbara eventually passed away peacefully and I have spent the last seven days by her side.

‘I, her family and friends will remember Barbara with love, a smile and affection for the many years of love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to all of our lives. and the entertainment she gave to so many thousands of others during her career. .

“Barbara’s final weeks were typical of how she lived her life. Full of humor, drama and combativeness until the end.’

Barbara played Peggy Mitchell on EastEnders for over 20 years.

The late actress appeared in a host of Carry On films between 1964 and 1974, including Carry On Spying, Carry On Doctor and Carry On Camping.

In true icon style, Barbara’s final TV role was in her own biopic, which chronicled her humble beginnings in Shoreditch through 1993, with Jaime Winstone and Samantha Spiro playing the star at different points in her life.

WHAT IS ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE?

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and degenerative disease of the brain, in which the accumulation of abnormal proteins leads to the death of nerve cells.

This disrupts the transmitters that carry the messages and causes the brain to shrink.

More than 5 million people suffer from the disease in the United States, where it is the 6th leading cause of death, and more than a million Britons have it.

WHAT HAPPENS?

When brain cells die, the functions they perform are lost.

This includes memory, orientation, and the ability to think and reason.

The progression of the disease is slow and progressive.

On average, patients live five to seven years after diagnosis, but some may live ten to 15 years.

FIRST SYMPTOMS:

  • Short term memory loss
  • disorientation
  • Behavioral changes
  • Mood swings
  • Difficulties managing money or making a phone call

LATER SYMPTOMS:

  • Severe memory loss, forgetting close family members, familiar objects or places
  • Become anxious and frustrated with the inability to make sense of the world, leading to aggressive behavior
  • Eventually loses the ability to walk
  • May have problems eating
  • The majority will eventually need round-the-clock care
