Christophe Soumillon has been banned for two months after an extraordinary and controversial incident in which he nudged compatriot Rossa Ryan out of the saddle during a race at Saint-Cloud.

Soumillon, who later apologized for his actions, was riding the Francis Graffard-trained Syros in the Group 3 Prix Thomas Bryon when, on the backstretch, his elbow came into contact with Ryan, who was riding the Captain Wierzba trained by Ralph Beckett.

The contact caused Ryan to be knocked off his mount. Ryan emerged unscathed from the incident, while Soumillon was banned for 60 days.

However, the jockey will be able to ride Vadeni in Sunday’s Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (3.05) since the suspension begins on October 14 and ends on December 12.

Soumillon said: “It was a terrible thing that happened. I was racing as always and two of us wanted the same spot. I thought I was relieving Rossa so I could stay behind Ryan. [Moore]. Unfortunately, on the very soft ground, it became unbalanced and came out.

“It was the first surprise because I was wondering what had happened. When I looked at the footage I could clearly see what had happened – that I had gone neck and neck with him, which unfortunately I should never have done.

“I made a mistake and I’m upset for my owner and trainer and his as it lost them both. The worst thing is when a jockey falls like that it could have been much worse for him.

“I’m reassured he’s fine and when I saw he wasn’t hurt I went to apologize straight away. That’s the best news of the day. That’s the kind of something no one wants to see in our sport.

“I completely understand the reaction of people who question what happened and think it was completely unacceptable, so it’s up to me to bear the consequences.”

“This maneuver was a mistake”

Soumillon will miss major events including the British Champions Day, the Breeders’ Cup and the Japan Cup, while his chance of winning the Cravache d’or – the French championship for flat jockeys – seems to be over. He has 21 winners behind Maxime Guyon.

Soumillon insisted the incident was unintentional.

“I have to serve two months of suspension, which is certainly a heavy sentence but nevertheless justified,” he added. “I have to accept things and I made a mistake. I should never have used my elbow to try to keep my position.

“This maneuver was a mistake and I regret it. I apologize to everyone, especially the relations of these two horses and to all who were shocked by what they saw.

“Now I have to stay very focused on what is the most important weekend of the year. I have to put things in order before I sit down on Monday or Tuesday and really think about things, but this weekend end, I have to stay in my bubble and do my best.”

Ryan told the Racing Post: “I just had a bump and lost my balance. It’s just one of those things that happens. I’m disappointed that Ralph and his team brought him here, but we’ll move on.

“The horse is fine, I’m fine. That’s the main thing. I’m 100 per cent.”

Syros, who finished second after the post, was disqualified.

Former jockey Andrew Thornton, who worked for Sky Sports Racing in Hexham, was highly critical of Soumillon’s actions.

He said: “When you go out at high speed and land on your feet, that’s when you’re going to break your leg. It’s like jumping out of a car at 35 mph.”

Group 3 was won by the continu formed by Aidan O’Brien, who were reduced to 20-1 (from 33) for next year’s Derby by Coral following their success.
