Global PC Shipments Fall Another 15.0% in Q3 2022, IDC Tracker Says

NEEDHAM, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE). Cooling demand and uneven supply contributed to a 15.0% year-over-year contraction. However, shipping volumes remain well above pre-pandemic levels when PC volumes were largely driven by retail refreshes due to the impending end of support for Windows 7.

“Consumer demand remained subdued although promotional activity from Apple and other players helped to mitigate the drop and reduce channel inventory by a few weeks across the board,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research lead for IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. “Supply also reacted to new lows by reducing orders, with Apple being the only exception as their supply in Q3 increased to compensate for lost orders resulting from lockdowns in China during Q2.”

“In addition to shipping volumes, we will be closely monitoring the evolution of average selling prices (ASP) this quarter,” added Linn Huang, vice president of research, Devices & Displays at IDC. “Shortages over the past few years have aggressively driven product line shifts to the high end. This, coupled with rising component and logistics costs, has driven ASPs up five quarters in a row. to $910 in 1Q22, the highest since 2004. However, with demand slowing, promotions in full swing and orders reduced, the rise in ASP reversed in 2Q22. ASP indicates a declining market.”
