A growing number of user reports online suggest that the microphone in some new Apple Watch Series 8 and Ultra models may persistently become unresponsive after an indefinite amount of time, causing apps that rely on the mic to generate errors and stop working.
Users have turned to MacRumors forums and Apple support community forums to chronicle the issue, resulting in the following Noise app error notification and also preventing system functions including Siri, Dictation, and Hand Wash Detection from working :
Measurement suspended
The Noise app cannot check sound levels when the Apple Watch is in Water Lock or when the microphone or speaker is in use.
Based on reports, the problem can be temporarily fixed by restarting the Apple Watch until the bug manifests again, suggesting that the issue is software-related rather than a hardware defect.
Updating the affected Ultra Watches to the latest post-release version of watchOS 9 does not resolve the issue, which Apple is apparently aware of. The company has replaced new models under warranty, presumably until it fixes the bug in an upcoming software update. We’ll update this article if we learn more.
